Energy Minister Charlie Parker announced at the Museum of Industry Friday morning that businesses and families could soon have access to natural gas in Pictou County, making the area a better place to do business and more affordable to live and raise families.

"Our businesses, families, and others in the community understand the benefits of natural gas, and the province is pleased to work with Heritage Gas to deliver it," Parker said. "It will save millions of dollars in energy costs for large industrial employers, with savings around the corner for small businesses, hospitals, schools and family homes."

Heritage Gas is investing uggs coupons $15.3 million to extend its pipeline 19 kilometres from Salt Springs, through Alma and into Abercrombie Point where Northern Pulp is.

"We are proud to make this substantial investment in getting natural gas to Pictou County," Jim Bracken, president of Heritage Gas, said at the announcement. "Energy is a significant cost for industrial and commercial enterprises, so we are proud that we can help companies strengthen their competitiveness and position in the community. Northern Pulp's commitment as our first anchor customer was critical to making this project work."

Bracken said extending the pipeline to ugg promo code Abercrombie Point is the first phase of its project in Pictou County, which is expected to start this spring and be finished by December. After that, Bracken said the company will move on to phase two.

"Phase two is an extension to New Glasgow and Stellarton, and we are currently planning that for sometime in 2014," Bracken said. "We'll assess the level of interest in New Glasgow and Stellarton and we already know that the interest there is quite strong."

Don Breen, acting general manager of Northern Pulp, said the mill decided to become the first corporation to jump on board with natural gas because its clean energy will cut down operating costs.

"Natural gas will save us $7 million a year on our energy bill," he said. "It will reduce our costs and it will sustain the future of the mill. I'm very excited. It's a big day for the mill and a good day for the county."

The province is contributing $2.5 million to help with startup, which will be refunded as more businesses join.

As Heritage Gas builds the pipeline, Northern Pulp will convert its plant to natural gas as part of the company's plan to reduce its energy costs and improve air quality and environmental performance. The province will lend Northern Pulp $3.6 million and provide a capital equipment incentive of $900,000 to help it convert.

"Our business is health care and we are continually seeking efficiencies and ways to save money. Natural gas will give us substantial annual savings, money that can be redirected to patient care."

Heritage Gas is submitting an application to the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board to expand into Pictou County. A separate application is being filed to establish a new rate for Northern Pulp.

Heritage Gas and Northern Pulp can terminate the agreement if the approvals are not granted.

The department of energy stated in a press release that natural gas burns cleaner than other fossil fuels, emitting 45 to 80 per cent less carbon dioxide than coal, and twothirds that of oil, with negligible sulfur dioxides.

Heritage Gas Limited is a Nova Scotiabased company formed to operate a full regulation natural gas distribution franchise in the province.

Heritage Gas reaches more than 20,000 households and businesses throughout Nova Scotia. It is owned by AltaGas Utility Group Inc., an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of AltaGas Limited.

Government handouts of tax payer dollars to 2 unsustainable private companies, that sounds about right!! Forgiving some loans, refinancing others and handing over more to the mill, if they can't pay their own bills they shouldn't be in business, that's the way things work. Giving millions to Heritage Gas to run the lines in, another unsustainable private company. People of Pictou County would be far better off getting the money to upgrade their current heating systems and taking advantage of utilities already offered here by local businesses, employing local people. Natural Gas isn't feasible in the HRM, how could it be any better here?? Time for the government to spend OUR money more wisely, not wasting it on Dead Beat companies.
